FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

Dear JP Families,
Happy February! February is a special month as we celebrate love, kindness, and friendship, and it is also a time when we proudly honor Black History Month. Throughout this month, we recognize and celebrate Black culture, history, and the countless contributions Black leaders, innovators, artists, and everyday heroes have made—and continue to make—to our nation. At John Paterson, we are committed to fostering kindness, respect, and appreciation for all cultures, and we look forward to meaningful learning and celebrations throughout the month.

As always, thank you for your continued partnership and support. Our school community thrives because of the care, patience, and teamwork we share—especially when it comes to keeping our students safe. I’d like to take a moment to share a few important reminders and updates as we move through these busy winter mornings.

Morning Drop-Off Safety
We kindly ask all families to please slow down during morning arrival. Many of our families park along the street and walk their children to the entrance, and we also have students who walk to school independently. Slowing down and staying alert helps ensure that every child arrives safely. Student safety is, and will always be, our top priority.

Snow Mound Awareness
With the recent weather, large snow mounds remain around our school grounds and roadways—and it looks like they won’t be melting anytime soon. These piles can limit visibility, so we ask families, students, and staff to be especially cautious when walking or driving near them. Staying aware and looking carefully before moving around them will help prevent accidents.

Morning Arrival Procedures
Mornings can be very busy, so please be sure to give yourself ample time when arriving at school. To keep the flow of cars moving smoothly, we ask that families do not stop or park in the drop-off line to walk their child into the building.
If you need to walk your child to the sidewalk at the main entrance, please park on Halleran Street and walk your child to the entrance from there. For safety and traffic flow reasons, please do not stop your vehicle and walk your child to the Pre-K entrance, as this causes backups and may result in students arriving late.
Mr. Tolisano is outside every morning supporting arrival and helping ensure a safe and efficient process. We truly appreciate your cooperation when following his directions. If needed, he will assist you with where to park, and if a vehicle is stopped in the middle of the line, he may ask that it be moved so traffic can continue to flow safely.

School Partnership & Events
Thank you for your ongoing partnership with our school. We encourage you to join us at our many upcoming events—there are so many wonderful opportunities to connect as a community! Please reach out to our PTO or snap a photo of the event posters around the school as a reminder.
If you ever need assistance or information, please don’t hesitate to contact our main office. Patti and Jess are always happy to help.

Welcome Our New School Nurse!
We are excited to share that we have an amazing new nurse at John Paterson! Mrs. Ishprit Kaur joins us from Kellogg Middle School and became part of our JP family this week. She is a truly wonderful person—inside and out—and we know she will be a great support to our students and families. Please join us in giving her a warm welcome!

As we move through this month of love, kindness, and friendship, we are reminded that keeping one another safe is one of the greatest acts of kindness we can show. Whether it’s slowing down during drop-off, being patient during busy mornings, or looking out for one another around our school grounds, every small action makes a big difference. Thank you for modeling care, respect, and responsibility for our students and for helping us keep John Paterson a safe, welcoming, and supportive community for all.

Warm regards,
Arleen Torres Ruiz
Principal

ART CORNER

CALLING ALL ARTISTS

Greetings, John Paterson Families and Friends~

Are you an Artist, Artisan, or Craftsperson? Would you like an opportunity to share your Art form with your child and his/her classmates in the John Paterson Art classroom? We, Mrs. Frazao and her Elementary Artists, would love to hear from and meet you!

In getting to know Paterson’s wonderful Elementary Artists, it has occurred to me that many of you, parents and/or extended family members, are practicing Visual Artists and/or Art Educators. We (myself and students) often think, “How amazing is that? What if they could visit and share their art process with us?”

I invite you, artists, artisans, and/or craftspeople, to John Paterson’s art classroom to share and process your artwork with your child and their classmates. With your visit to the Art class, we hope students will extend their learning of concepts taught to the community and apply them to real-world life experiences.

It is also VERY sweet to see how proud students are when they can share a loved one with friends!

Please consider an art class visit anytime during the 2025-26 school year. Email me at cfrazao@npsct.org, and we can work together to plan a date/time/experience for your child and their classmates!
